Most first-timers head for the world-renowned underwater trail at Trunk Bay. Only a few hundred yards long, the trail is clearly marked by plaques set on the bottom. The National Park and a few water-sports centers offer round-island snorkel tours. Lasting most of the day, these trips will take you to three or four locations, often places that can't be reached by car. Flanagan's Cay, off the southeastern coast, which has impressive coral heads - some as high as 12 feet - in only 20 feet of water.
St. Thomas Snorkeling
The reefs around St. Thomas offer endlessly fascinating underwater exploration for both expert snorkelers and beginners. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island teem with marine life - vivdly colored tropical fish glide through canyons of spectacular coral and sponges, easily accessible to snorkelers.
